Leicester Community bowled over with New Walking Cricket programme!
Leicestershire County Cricket Club also identified that their existing community engagement programmes were not attended by Leicester’s BME population. Working together with the Centre for BME Health, barriers to engagement were identified including location, perception of sports clubs and who they work with and peer support. Our community engagement officers worked closely with LCCC to bring together Walking Cricket.
Walking Cricket is a 1.5 hour session held at Leicester Arena, the venue of the Leicester Riders Basketball based in the heart of the community. The sessions run for 12 weeks and include cricket skills coaching by the Leicestershire County Cricket Club coaches, followed by games of walking cricket. Walking cricket has been a big success with the LCCC still supporting the programme and a second season under the way! This is a great opportunity to meet new friends and socialise, gain benefits of physical activity, take part in something safe and fun as well as trying something new and hit a six!
